This mask was inspired by the historic words uttered by Melbourne local, Jodi, on Channel 9 News while on a walk outside her 5km radius during Melbourne’s lockdown. For anyone outside Melbourne, Brighton is an affluent suburb about 20 minutes out of the CBD. The quote became the ‘Let them eat cake’ of lockdown Melbourne.
The TikTok clip
I created this clip and artwork inspired by the news story, infusing the rough hand lettering with flourishes and swirls to compliment the iconic phrase. The comments section blew up asking for prints, I did one better…
…and the orders came flooding in
This was around the time that Melbournians were looking for longer-term mask options, we knew they were going to be around for a while. The mask became a marker in Melbourne’s history and 50% of sales went to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
